This photo of the Provo LDS Temple was my second real attempt at HDR photography. The effect is much more subtle than in my previous attempt (which can be found here: www.flickr.com/photos/jlcarroll/4309113618/ ). This time the HDR only helps to bring out some of the subtler details, but the hue and saturation are very much like the originals.

In this shot, the sun is setting behind me and reflecting off the windows of the building. Because the sun was setting, it was actually a bit darker out than is immediately apparent in the photo, thus requiring longer exposure times.

All the lines point upward towards the center of the photograph. This is true even in the lines formed by the snow in the mountain behind the temple. The spire sits at the center of many triangular figures. This creates some symmetry, and a feeling of grounded stability flowing into upward motion. Religiously the idea could be one of movement upward towards heaven. The horizontal lines formed by the road, and the base of the temple add to the feeling of stability, and tranquility. These elements are not so much photographic compositional choices, so much as architectural ones, chosen by the designers of the building for just this effect.
